The Building of the Dispensary Extension 2015 – 2019

Work on the dispensary extension started in March 2015. The local population helped by providing labour – carrying water, breaking stone and digging foundations. However from July to December the priority had to be working on the land – growing and harvesting millet. By the end of March 2016 the main building – phase 1 – was well on the way to being finished.

By July 2016 the first phase was completed. The doors, windows and interior were painted.

Equipment was installed by September.

During ‘Téréli Days‘, trees were planted near the Dispensary Extension to provide shade.

A second building to improve facilities is necessary to gain ‘Health Centre‘ status. This will have a laboratory, storage rooms, a waiting room, and extra hospitalisation rooms. Work breaking stone started in March 2017. In total 16,000 stones are needed. Surrounding villages helped with this task.

It was good to receive news that the first building has helped many people. From July to November 2017, which corresponds to the time of an upsurge of malaria, all the rooms had been used to hospitalise and care for the sick. 102 patients had to be hospitalised, 320 patients were seen and treated. The nurse and his care assistant have ensured, and continue to ensure, by a relay system, the smooth running of the new extension and the old Dispensar.
This first building of the Dispensary Extension has met our expectations not only by the ease of access for the people to the west and south, but also by the size of the rooms which have allowed greater numbers of hospital places for the sick.

In June 2018 we received photos showing the buildings completed and a well so there is access to clean water. The second building is made up of a laboratory for routine blood tests, a staff room, an office for the doctor, a store for the storage of vaccination kits and medicines and a delivery room.

In January 2019 solar panels were installed with the help of several volunteers. They connected the two buildings with a cable by installing a giant pole in the middle. All rooms are now well lit.
A lot of trees were planted and a caretaker hired. The trees are watered using the well that was dug last year and are looked after by volunteers.

Detailed reports are available for those interested.
