Douru Tembely visited Burley in March 2000.

Before coming to Burley, Douru spent two weeks in Huyton near Liverpol. He had been invited by the Huyton Churches Charity Shop in grateful thanks for their visit to Mali. Douru works for Action for Human Promotion – Bandiagara. This project initially focused on water but then broadened its area of work to include health, the environement and education. Douru was in charge of literacy but has other management responsibilities now.

Douru spent a very busy day in Burley. It started with an invitation from Revd. Peter Sutcliffe to have breakfast at Open Door.

Douru was very keen to spend time in one of our schools and spoke to youngsters at Burley Middle School about life in Mali and the desperate need for water .

There was the opportunity to discuss literacy projects in the afternoon with Judith, a member of a group in Burley involved with providing material for the school in Tereli.

Walking through the allotments, Douru was intrigued to find soil covered with polythene to maintain temperature.

An enjoyable evening was spent at ‘Pilots’, a youth group at the United Reformed Church. Douru talked about the need for wells. Youngsters tried carrying the blue and yellow bucket on their heads.

Even though this visit was vey brief, it provided a wonderful opportunity to find out about the work of one of Christian Aid’s partners.
