Many people will be aware that money raised from the 2002 Calendar was divided between Christian Aid for well digging projects in the Dogon region of Mali and the Joliba Trust for their work in Téréli. It was decided that some of the money should be used to build a Maternity.

At the end of June news came through that the Maternity had got to the ‘roof timber’ stage. They had to look for suitably strong large dead hardwood beams for this purpose. In an area where the desert is advancing it is very important to protect trees.

Towards the end of July photographs showing the progress of the Maternity arrived. The people of Téréli are making a beautiful job of it. All of the stones have been hand–chipped into shape by the men to make bricks for the walls. It is possible to see the three rooms and the terrace to keep it shady as the temperature reaches 50c. They have found beams for the roof but the work on it stopped so that everyone could work on the land during the rainy season

March 03

We received photographs showing the finishing stages of the Maternity. The Joliba Trust have arranged for a hospital–trained Midwife to carry out training courses for the village birth attendants. The Maternity will make such a difference to their work.

June 2003

Photographs showing the women at the Maternity have arrived. The Joliba Trust sent them with the news that the Maternity was officially opened on June 7.
